Cumbrian Hotel Goes Eco
Looking to the future

2022 has been a big year for the Crown Hotel in Wetheral. Following the completion of a seven-figure sum refurbishment in Spring 2022 including a full refurbishment of all hotel bedrooms and many public areas.
The Crown Hotel has set it sights on another huge goal; substantially reducing its carbon footprint, sustainability and environmental focus.
Sustainability in a snapshot
- In 2021, a CHP machine was invested in and installed, which effectively converts gas into energy to be used to run their fitness facility, Riverside Fitness.
- Looking to the future, The Crown is installing 50 KW of solar panels for renewable energy, guaranteeing a green energy source for electricity and improving the hotel's efficiency.
- Smart energy sensors are going to be installed to prevent unnecessary use of energy throughout the hotel public areas to include smart lighting.
- Installation of additional electric car charge points. The hotel already has an electric car point, but we want to improve accessibility of these points for customers with electric vehicles.
General manager Chris McLaughlin said ‘Environmental focus is a huge topic and something on everyone’s mind. We feel it is important in this current climate that we do our bit. Together working with Cumbria LEP, we have a plan in place to make gradual but significant improvements to our business and operation.’
Keeping it local
- Working with a number of local suppliers across all channels of the hotel, from local meat from the butcher, locally grown vegetables and eggs to sustainability sourced and organic toiletries for our bedrooms.
- Initiatives to increase recycling, minimising plastic & wastage wherever possible also help along the way.
2022 and 2023 will see The Crown implement the above as well as many more plans to contribute to this huge shift.
